“Friends
How many of us have them?
Friends
Ones we can depend on
Friends
How many of us have them?
Friends
Before we go any further, lets be
Friends”
– Whodini
My friend came to visit the other day and we were talking about life after my accident. He was telling me how most people just don’t really know the magnitude of what you deal with, not only physically and mentally on a daily basis but also the ongoing financial challenges too. Then he asked “if you could make one expense disappear what would that be?” I told him it would be my nurse care because it cost me about 1000 bucks a month and is definitely the most important. He was totally shocked that I had to come up with 12 thousand dollars a year with no help from insurance just for my nurse care alone (each year for almost 6 years now). He said, “I don’t know how we’re going to do it yet but that’s it, our goal is to raise 12k this year to take care of those nurse expenses!”
I’ve been totally stressed about making ends meet lately and in that moment without receiving a dime I had such a feeling of relief. It’s something about knowing that somebody gets it, it just feels good.
I wrote this to say if you know someone who has had a traumatic injury, talk to them, ask what they need even if it’s been years after injury. It’s an easy way to let them know you care and you haven’t forgotten. It also gives you a chance to find out what you can do to help that will have the most impact which will really hit home with your friend/love one.
Sidenote: don’t forget to visit, that’s always a great pick me up.
